- Using the program Chmmkr
-
- When students are first presented with chemical reactions many
- of them have trouble visualizing what is going on at the molecular
- level. This program is designed to help the student gain a better
- understanding of chemical reactions and the conditions required for
- reactions to occur. Five reactions of various types are included
- in the registered version (2 in the unregistered version). The
- student is first asked for the correct starting materials required
- for the reaction and conditions of temperature, pressure, and
- whether a catalyst is needed. Feedback is provided immediately
- regarding the choices made. When the correct starting materials
- and conditions are give a graphical representation of the reaction
- including an animated sequence is presented.
-
- Installing chhmkr on you hard drive.
- To install chmmkr on your hard drive type and enter the word
- install at the dos prompt when you are in the directory where the
- chmmkr files are contained. A directory called c:\chmmkr will be
- created and all files will be transferred to that directory. As
- an alternative use the dos copy command to copy all files to a
- directory of your choice.
- To show the chmmkr icon on Program Manager in Windows select
- the program group you want to contain the icon. Select New from
- the File menu of Program Manager. Program item should be chosen.
- The name of the program is Chmmkr and the command line is
- c:\chmmkr\chmmkr.exe. Double click on the icon to start the
- program.
-
- Purpose of the Program
- The purpose of chmmkr, the chemical synthesizer program, is
- to give the introductory chemistry student a feel for what is
- occurring at the atomic level when chemical reactions occur. In
- addition to showing graphical representations of reactions on the
- atomic level, the program also requires the student to be able to
- choose the correct reagents in order to synthesize a predetermined
- element or compound and the conditions of temperature, pressure,
- and catalysis required for the reaction. All major types of
- reactions that introductory chemistry students encounter are
- presented.
- See the lab that accompanies the registered program for more
- information.
-
- Advantages of registering:
- When you register (see register.doc) you will receive a total
- of 5 different animated reactions. Registration costs $10 + $2
- shipping and handling. This fee entitles you to a site license for
- the program and a copy of a lab which can be used with the program.
-
- Main Menu Items:
-
- Start..F2
- When this menu item is chosen a dialog box will be presented
- which contains a list of starting materials, temperature
- conditions, pressure conditions, catalytic requirements, and the
- substance to be synthesized. Use the mouse and/or tab key to
- choose the appropriate choices. Any incorrect responses with be
- so indicated in a message box. When all choices are correct a
- graphical representation of the reaction will be presented. It can
- be started by choosing the Reaction menu item Start Reaction or by
- pressing the Mix/Ignite key
-
- Exit
- Ends the program. Press Alt-X or choose from the menu.
-
- Reaction Menu Items:
-
- Start Reaction
- Choosing this item will cause the current reaction to start.
- Clicking on the menu item or on the mix/ignite push button will
- accomplish the same thing.
-
- Repeat
- Choosing this item will cause the current reaction to repeat.
- Clicking on the menu item or on the push button will accomplish the
- same thing.
-
- Exit
- Goes back to the main window. Pressing F2 again will give the
- next reaction.
-
- Help is available at any time during the program by choosing
- Index from the Help menu. If you do not know how to use Windows
- Help choose Using Help from the Help menu.
